Murphree Hall
Project Description:
Owner: University of Florida, Division of Housing, Gainesville, Florida
Murphree Hall at the University of Florida was built in 1938 and named for Albert A. Murphree, the second president of the University of Florida. The classic example of "collegiate gothic" architecture, is home to 350 co-eds preparing for careers in the 21st century. Murphree Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. Today, it remains as one of three non air-conditioned halls.
Recognizing the need to accommodate the contemporary student, the University instituted the Housing Network system. The Housing Network system at Murphree Hall consists of 76,000 feet (14 miles) of hybrid multi-media cabling feeding 376 telephone and data outlets. The multi-media cable consists of one Category 3 voice cable, one Category 5 data cable, one RG6 cable and two multi-mode fiber-optic cables. The RG6 and fiber are for "future proofing".
Installation of the network infrastructure in this historic hall presented many unique challenges, not the least of which was installing the cable riser without compromising the architectural appearance of the hall. Olson Communications technicians used clever and innovative ways to preserve the character of this institution. A cable tray system was installed beneath the crawl space and in the basement to provide a path for the horizontal distribution. Risers were concealed in chases in the stairwells and interior room distribution was by architectural surface raceways. Olson Communications technicians employed on this project utilized the very latest in cabling technology. All technicians are BICSI registered.
